Thursday March 3 rd English Grammar 1 1. Homework Review 2. Comparing Professions using Comparatives and Superlatives Homework for Monday 4. Individual Questions/Concerns

Homework Review (10 min)  Blog! Did you invite me?  How are you doing on your PIP?  Quizzes on types of verbs. What did you think?

What Am I Saying Here? (10 min) The teaching profession is as old as any profession I can think of. Your teaching ability is as important as your English level. English teachers learn other languages as quickly as French teachers. The teaching profession is older than the computer science profession. Is there anything more boring than studying math? Teachers seem happier than engineers. Learing to teach is more difficult than learning English grammar. English teachers are better at speaking English than doctors. Teachers learn languages more easily than bankers.

Comparative Guidelines  Comparing two things or actions  When comparing with as…as, the adjective or adverb does not change  When comparing with than:  1-syllable adjectives and adverbs: add –er to the adjective or adverb  Example?  2-syllable adjectives and adverbs: use more with the unchanged adjective or adverb  Example?  2-syllable adjectives ending in –y: change the –y to –ier  Example?  3 or more syllable adjectives and adverbs: use more with the unchanged adjective or adverb  Example?  Common irregular comparatives: good, bad, far

What Am I Saying Here? (10 min) Teachers in the USA have the lowest salaries out of all professionals. Teaching is the most noble of all professions. Some people believe the easiest part of being a teacher understanding content. The most enjoyable part of being a teacher is seeing students develop. English teachers learn languages the fastest out of all the types of teachers.

Superlative Guidelines  Comparing more than two things or actions  1-syllable adjectives and adverbs: add –est to the adjective or adverb  Example?  2-syllable adjectives and adverbs: use the most with the unchanged adjective or adverb  Example?  2-syllable adjectives ending in –y: change the –y to –iest (plus the)  Example?  3 or more syllable adjectives and adverbs: use the most with the unchanged adjective or adverb  Example?  Common irregular superlatives: good, bad, far

Other Comparative and Superlative Patterns (5 min)  Less and Least  Opposite of more and most  Use them with long and short words  Examples,  Teaching is less respected than policing in the USA.  Teaching in the USA is one of the least respected professions.

Other Comparative and Superlative Patterns (30 min)  You are going to do internet research on other comparative and superlative patterns.  Find a partner.  Open a MSWord document.  Name the document comp_super_yourfirstnames  Search on English language or English grammar websites for comparative and superlative patterns.  Take notes in your document about 1 of them.  Save the file to the desktop.  Be prepared to present the comparative and superlative patterns to the class.

Other Comparative and Superlative Patterns  Before comparatives you can use much, a lot, far (a lot), a bit, a little, slightly (a little)  Teachers are much better at language than engineers.  Harder and harder/More and more/Faster and faster/Less and less  Repeat to say something is changing continuously  Examples,  It’s becoming harder and harder to find teaching jobs.  Teaching jobs are becoming more and more difficult to find.  The government wants teachers to finish college faster and faster every year.  There is less and less financial support for research on teaching every year.  Example:

Other Comparative and Superlative Patterns  You can use any and no before comparatives  It doesn’t take teachers any longer to learn than doctors.  The _____ … the better.  To say a change in one things goes with a change in another  Example  The sooner a teacher learns to take care of themselves the better.  The _____ … the _____.  To say that one things depends on the other  Examples  The more teachers there are the higher the education level of the the population is.  The younger you are when you start teaching the less respect you have.

Practice Comparative and Superlative Patterns (30 min)  Now you will do some controlled practice with a partner.  Find your partner again.  Open the MSWord file again.  Answer the odd (3,5,7…) questions on the worksheet that I provide you and your partner.  Write in complete sentences.  Don’t do section 105.5!  Don’t write on the worksheets!

Homework 1 (Due Monday)  Take out a clean sheet of paper.  Put your name on it.  Go to the class website and find the class for today.  Open the pdf document for the homework.  Answer the even (2,4,6…) questions from 105.1, 105.2, 105.3, in complete sentences.  Bring the paper to class on Monday.

Homework 3 (Due Monday) Be prepared to give an oral report on your PIP in class on Monday and every class after that.

Questions and Concerns  Arrange the room before you leave.
