The Human Body Miss Harbach 5 th grade

The Skeletal System A baby's body has about 300 "soft" bones at birth. These eventually fuse (grow together) to form the 206 bones that adults have. By the time you are 25, this process will be complete. After this happens, there can be no more growth - the bones are as big as they will ever be.

The Digestive System The digestive system is made up of your mouth, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, gall bladder, small and large intestine, liver, rectum, and anus. mouth, esophagus All the different varieties of food we eat are broken down by our digestive system and transported to every part of our body by our circulatory system.

The Muscular System Almost half the body's weight is muscle. Muscles are the part of our body that allow us to move. They are made up of special tissues that can contract, or shorten, when they receive a signal from the brain. There are more than 640 muscles, and they hardly ever work alone. Muscles can get shorter and pull, but they cannot push.

The Lymphatic System The lymphatic system is important to the body’s defense mechanisms. It filters out organisms that cause disease, produce certain white blood cells and generates antibodies. It is also important for the distribution of fluids and nutrients in the body, because it drains excess fluids and protein so that tissues do not swell up.

The Endocrine System The endocrine system is instrumental in regulating mood, growth and development, tissue function, and metabolism, as well as reproductive processes. The foundations of the endocrine system are the hormones and glands. As the body's chemical messengers, hormones transfer information and instructions from one set of cells to another.

The Nervous System The Nervous System is the most complex and delicate of all the body systems. At the centre of the nervous system is the brain. The brain sends and receives messages through a network of nerves. Also a part of the nervous system is the spinal cord. It‘s a thick bundle of nerves which run down the centre of the spine. Along the spinal cord smaller bunches of nerves branch out.nerves

The Cardiovascular System Made up of the heart, blood and blood vessels, the circulatory system is your body's delivery system.heart Blood moving from the heart, delivers oxygen and nutrients to every part of the body. On the return trip, the blood picks up waste products so that your body can get rid of them. Bloodheart

The Urinary System The urinary system’s job is filtering out excess fluid and other substances from your bloodstream. Some fluid gets reabsorbed by your body but most gets expelled as urine. Your body makes chemical waste products it can't use. They go into your bloodstream, then pass into your kidneys where the excess fluid and chemical stuff your body can't use is filtered out.

Scavenger Hunt It’s your body, so why not be an expert in it? You’ll find the answers to all of these questions in the My Body sectionMy Body 1. How many bones does an adult have? 2. Can you remember which part of your brain helps you remember things? 3. What part of your digestive system is like a mixer?

Scavenger Hunt (continued) 5. If you weigh 80 pounds, about how much of your weight is muscle? 6. Where can you find your pulse? 7. How fast is a sneeze? 8. What happens to your skin to make it wrinkled and soggy in water?
