Henry and Becket

Becket was brought up as a Merchant’s son. He was well educated in different schools around Europe.

Henry and Becket =

Henry made Becket… Archbishop King Henry appointed Becket archbishop in 1162, after Bishop Theobald died in He thought that this would unite the Crown and the Church. &

The dispute began in a disagreement. The Question was whether bad churchmen should be tried in church court or in the king’s court. * Many people chose to be tried in the church courts * as they knew that the church would not punish by violence.

BUT the argument was mainly evolved around who was really in charge of England -

Constitutions of Clarendon No man could be excommunicated without the king’s permission The king could appoint Archbishops and Bishops That no churchman could leave the country without the king’s permission Churchmen found guilty would be tried in the king’s court. Henry II, King of England Thomas á Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury ?

So Basically… Henry wanted power …

What did Becket think? Although Becket was Henry’s best friend before becoming Archbishop, Becket now thought that the Church was more powerful than the King and so he refused to sign the Constitution of Clarendon, as Henry wanted.

Henry was getting angry and the quarrel continued. Becket fled into exile in 1164 to France, leaving Henry II to become even more angry.

Thomas returned to England in * * * Henry was said to have cried out, “Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?” * * * On the 29 th of December 1170, four knights had heard this and sought to find Thomas and KILL HIM!

The four knights were… William Tracy Hugh de Morville Richard le Breton Reginald Fitzurse

The four Knights entered the Cathedral asking for the ‘traitor’ Becket – they wanted him to apologise and say he was wrong. There was an argument and Becket was struck by 4 blows, the last taking off the top of his head! Becket was dead…

Henry was very angry when he heard that his BFF had been killed by these four knights he sent them on a pilgrimage. *** Henry was said to have walked through Canterbury with bare feet and was whipped by monks. *** Henry slept by Becket’s tomb click

Becket was made a saint in 1173
