EXAMPLE PARAGRAPH: Stevenson builds tension and drama in this passage when he describes Hyde reacting to Utterson with a ‘hissing intake of breath’. Immediately, the use of the onomatopoeic verb ‘hissing’ brings with it connotations that Hyde represents threat, danger and evil. The links to ideas of a serpent are instantly obvious and a Victorian reader would have recognised this allusion. The deliberate imagery that Stevenson employs here reminds us of the snake in the Garden of Eden – a metaphor for evil and threat but also of temptation. This Biblical reference tells both the contemporary and a modern audience that Hyde is linked both to the concept of evil and danger, but also the temptation of evil – the way in which human nature is easily led to commit sin. In this way Stevenson is able to build the drama and significance of this meeting between the two characters.
