1 Chapter 5 Incident of The Letter

2 Sketch and label a picture of the laboratory

3 How does Dr. Jekyll greet Mr. Utterson? P.35
Dr. Jekyll stays seated and looks very sick but holds up a cold hand.

4 How does Dr. Jekyll respond to his lawyer’s question about Sir Carew? P.35
He says Hyde is gone and will not be heard from again. How does Stevenson show Jekyll’s emotions?p.35 “cried the doctor” Reinforces his point by saying it three times in different ways: “I will never set eyes on him again”; “I am done with him in this world” and “he will never more be heard of”

5 What does Dr. Jekyll give to his lawyer? What does it say? P.35
A letter from Mr. Hyde – it says he is safe and Jekyll should not worry. “I have - I have received a letter” What does this quote suggest about Jekyll’s feelings about the letter? The use of the dash shows hesitation; this coupled with the repetition of “I have” illustrates how uneasy he feels.

6 What does Dr. Jekyll mean when he says, “I have had a lesson- O God, Utterson, what a lesson I have had.”? P.36 He is upset about the murder and has learned that he does not have as much control over Hyde as he thought.

7 Why does Mr. Utterson grow fearful again after speaking to Mr. Poole? P.36
Poole says no one has delivered a letter – Utterson thinks Hyde must have delivered it himself at the lab door.

8 What does Mr. Guest conclude about the letter from Dr. Jekyll? P.38
The handwriting in Jekyll’s letter is very similar to Hyde’s—they only have different slope. They are written by the same person.

9 What does Mr. Utterson think about the letter at the end of the chapter?
Utterson fears Jekyll wrote this letter to cover up for Mr. Hyde. In other words, he thinks that Dr. Jekyll is covering for a murderer.
