Supporting the NHS to deliver better, safer, quality care NHS Connecting for Health

What is NHS CFH? NHS Connecting for Health (NHS CFH) is supporting the NHS to deliver better, safer care for patients We are working together to introduce new information technology systems and services which improve the way information is stored and shared We are supporting the delivery of High Quality Care for All

What is NHS CFH responsible for? New information technology systems and services – which are together known as the National Programme for IT (NPfIT) Existing business critical national NHS IT systems

Our Mission Provide patients with more choice and control Create a health service designed around the patient Provide health professionals and patients with better access to information Help health professionals deliver better patient care Provide a service fit for the 21 st Century To support quality driven care

Why a National Programme for IT? Patients have growing expectations about choice, convenience, quality and responsiveness. Treatment can be delivered by a team of health care staff based in different buildings or organisations across primary and secondary care, or out in the community. Complex modern care requires information to be shared effectively - paper based records and computer systems that are not linked up do not support this.

Need for Change Care provided more complex - technically and organisationally Paper based systems do not support information sharing Patients receive treatment from many health care professionals Patients want greater involvement in decisions about their care

NPfIT core programmes N3 - secure broadband National Network for the NHS NHS Care Records Service (NHS CRS) – linking patient information electronically in the NHS - detailed records shared locally between NHS organisations caring for the patient - Summary Care Records available across England to support emergency and out of hours care Picture Archiving Communications Systems (PACS) – digital x-rays and scans for faster diagnosis NHSmail – secure and directory service

NPfIT core programmes – continued Choose and Book – electronic booking service, enabling the patient to choose the time, date and place of their first outpatient appointment Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) – enabling prescription messages to be sent electronically from prescriber to dispenser Support for GP IT – including GP Systems of Choice (GPSoC), electronic patient record transfer (GP2GP) and QMAS (payment system for GPs)

NHS Care Records Service (NHS CRS) Will provide individual electronic NHS Care Record for 50+ million patients 587,082 NHS Staff registered to date At the centre of all new systems and services 258,488 Summary Care Records have been created to date

Choose and Book Supports greater choice and convenience for patients Over 33,000 bookings in a single day, 14,792,181 total bookings 90% GP practices made a patient referral 100% acute hospitals live 100% primary care trusts live

Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) 187,540,645 prescription messages transmitted 7,928 GP practices have had technical upgrades to the new system. 6,496 of these practices are actively operating the EPS 9,603 pharmacy systems have had technical upgrades to the new system and 8,553 are actively operating EPS.

N3 - Connectivity A secure broadband national network for the NHS Over 32,000 secure connections 100% of existing GP sites who require a connection have had this delivered One of the largest virtual private networks (VPN) in the world

NHSmail Over 350,000 registered users Approx 1.6 million messages sent/received via NHSmail everyday 30% of NHS staff using NHSmail for secure transfer of patient identifiable data

Picture Archiving Communications Systems (PACS) PACS has now been deployed to 100% of hospital trusts in England The focus for PACS is now concentrated on image sharing between locations Regional stores and national image transfer capability being developed

GP IT – Quality Management and Analysis System (QMAS) Roll out completed on budget in 28 weeks

GP IT – GP2GP record transfer Over 542,066 medical record transfers 5,233 GP practices have had technical upgrades to the new system. 5,102 of these practices are actively operating GP2GP
