Taking Salzburg Forward New set of recommendations put forward by EUA Arguing for continuing reforms and make institutional structures “broad, systematic, and inclusive” (as opposed to limited, ad hoc, and exclusive) Making structures open for dialogue between different stakeholders Supervisors University leaders External stakeholders (employers) Doctoral candidates

Challenge 1: Ethics and integrity Research happens in an increasingly competitive context – less resources, more strings attaches Pressure to perform – can weaken integrity New techniques, big data, privacy, cultural differences all have ethical components Doctoral candidates need a sound research culture from the start; they need training, and more… Explicit rules, sound daily practice

Challenge 2: digitalisation Open research, open education (MOOCs), social media, big data etc Doctoral candidates are already there Universities need to provide adequate framework and coherent policies for “technical, legal, and ethical aspects”, and supervisors must be aware There is a huge potential benefit, but a framework is needed

Challenge 3: globalisation of research Technological possibilities Revolution in gathering and sharing data Ease of communication ( , Skype, teleconferences) Ease of physical mobility ’Open science’ Need for an institutional approach beyond mobility Universities as entry point for new citizens Links to broader debates about inclusive universities

Summary Another good year for EUA-CDE High participation, more members High satisfaction New challenges raise new questions Changes in the Steering Committee and Secretariat, but the active and committed membership base remains!

…19… Thank you for your attention – and thanks for a good year
