Lesson 2.8 Graph Linear Inequalities in Two Variables

Objective Students will graph linear inequalities in two variables.

Standard Prep for 2.0 – Students solve systems of linear equations and inequalities (in two or three variables) by substitution, with graphs, or with matrices.

Solution An ordered pair (x, y) of a linear inequality in two variables if the inequality is true when the values of x and y are substituted into the inequality.

Example

Graph The set of all points in a coordinate plane that represent solutions of the inequality

Graphing a Linear Inequality Remember – Graph using techniques practiced when graphing linear equations but solution set is defined by inequality

Test Point Test (0, 0) if the graph does not pass through the origin. – If the point makes a true statement, shade that side of the boundary. – If the point makes a false statement, shade the opposite side of the boundary as the point tested.

Example

The Real World
