Adaptations of Plants and Animals
The Arctic is mostly ice and snow with many animals. When the tundra comes many plants grow. The word “tundra” means treeless plain. The growing season.
The polar is very icy and snowy. It is flat and snow covers the ground. It is very cold.

Too Far From Home By Joe Smith Susie Douglas Bill Jones

The Problem An alien collector not authorized for collection of Earth animals from all Earth biomes when he saw the Intergalactic Life Form Protection Officers approaching, he dumped his cargo. All animals landed safely but not in the correct biome. An army of volunteers activated to help the animals survive in the new biome until they can be returned to their home biome.

Artic Fox Characteristic Home Biome: Tundra Habits –Do not hibernate Type of animal –Mammal –Canine Family Physical Characteristics (adaptations) –Short compact body (less heat loss) –Fur color changes to match winter environment –Fur one of the densest –6 to 10 lbs –Well furred feet Food needs –Small game –Winter follows Polar Bears and eats left overs –Buries food in fall to deep freeze Other needs –Lives in den –Solitary

Desert Vs. Tundra Desert Tundra Summer Ave Temp +100 Summer Ave Temp +45 Winter moderate Winter Ave Temp -30 Less than 10 inches Annual Rainfall Perma Frost Little rain but stays near surface Little rain runs off or evaporates quickly Animals found outside during day Some definition of seasons Striking definition of season Perma Frost

Needs: Little or No Adaptation Needed Food –Small animals available year round (may be better than own biome) Temperature –Winter temperatures more like Summer temperatures in own biome

Needs: Adaptation Needed Summer Temperatures –Very high may need cooling or go outside at night Water not as plentiful White winter coat would make them stand out Winter coat may be too warm Used to looking for small animals in the snow. Might be a problem Enemies –Coyotes, Katamundi, Dogs, Wild Cats
