Welcome to the Year 3 ‘Learn with your child’ Maths workshop

Key calculation strategies: Number lines

Keep the biggest number whole and partition the other number. First add on the tens and then the units = Addition

Put the biggest number on the right hand side of the number line. Partition the second number. First subtract the tens and then the units = Subtraction

Draw 3 jumps of 4. 3 x 4 = Multiplication

Count in groups of 4 until you reach 24. Count how many jumps to find the answer. 24 ÷ 4 = Division

Later in the year, those children who are ready will progress to using column methods for addition and subtraction as an alternative strategy.
