How do organisms interact with one another in an Ecosystem?  Symbiosis explains how two organisms interact with one another, there are many types of symbiotic relationships or ways organisms interact.

1) Predation When one species the predator hunts another species, the prey EX: Owls prey on mice

2) Parasitism One species (parasite) obtains energy by living off of another species. EX: Tapeworms live in the intestines of a dog, absorbing nutrients from the food it eats

3) Mutualism Two species work together, each benefiting from the relationship EX: Bees gather nectar (their food) from flowers and then spread the flowers pollen so that the flower can reproduce.

4) Commensalism One organism benefits and the other is neither helped or harmed EX: Monarch larva feed on milkweeds which contain a chemical that is poisonous to birds.

What is Competition in an Ecosystem? When two or more species compete for the same resource (food). EX: A lot of birds and a squirrel fighting for the same nuts, and there is only enough to feed one species

What is the impact of Competition? 1) Species divide smaller resources instead of competing for them. 2)When two species are competing for a limited food source/resources, eventually one of the competing species will die out. This is known as the Competitive Exclusion Principal

States that no two species can occupy the same niche in the same habitat at the same time. Either one species will become extinct or the other species will evolve to fit a new niche.

Describe relationships in an Ecosystem. Organisms obtain energy from living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) things in their environment. How an organism obtains its energy nutrients is important because it tells us how energy is used. In an Ecosystem energy is used by Producers Consumers Decomposers
