In the early 1600s, Europeans started to explore North America.

Henry Hudson was an explorer who set out to find a water route to Asia and instead explored the Delaware Bay in Half Moon Henry Hudson

Etienne Brule explored the area around the Susquehanna River in He was the first European in what is now Pennsylvania.

Explorers recorded their observations by drawing maps and writing in journals.

Many Europeans who first came to the area of what is now Pennsylvania traded with Native Americans for fur, mainly beaver pelts.

Cornelius Hendrickson started a fur trading post near present-day Philadelphia.
