3 Announcements Today we will be going over some new vocabulary for our upcoming unit. The guiding question for this unit will be: Why did Europeans colonize North America/Africa and not the other way around? To answer this we will look at: Native American Cultures African Culture European motivations for exploration Early attempts at colonizing America Some of you will be getting your tests back today.  In order to do any corrections you will need to: Complete the study guide Attend a REACH reteaching session Complete a test reflection sheet Make it to a Friday Night School session to complete your corrections.

4 Beringia Using your device, textbook, or dictionary, look up the word Beringia Create a memory clue or use the word in a sentence Definition:  A land mass which connected North America (Alaska) to Asia (Russia) during the Ice Age

5 New World Using your device, textbook, or dictionary, look up the term New World  Create a memory clue or use the word in a sentence   Definition:  A phrase which is typically used in reference to North and South America.  "New" because the Europeans were just discovering it. This is a map printed in 1540 depicting what was then understood to be North America.  Most notably it includes a mythical sea which cuts North America in half. This "sea", named after it's supposed discoverer Giovanni da Verrazano, was likely either the Chesapeake Bay or perhaps the Hudson River.

6 Old World Using your device, textbook, or dictionary, look up the term Old World Create a memory clue or use the word in a sentence    Definition:  A phrase which is typically used in reference to Europe and Asia.  "Old" because the Europeans already knew about it.

7 NorthWest Passage Using your device, textbook, or dictionary, look up the term Northwest Passage Create a memory clue or use the word in a sentence  Definition:  A sea route which, supposedly, could go around North America by travelling through northern bodies of water.

8 Conquistador Using your device, textbook, or dictionary, look up the word Conquistador Create a memory clue or use the word in a sentence  Definition:  A Spanish explorer/mercenary who came to North America looking for fame and gold.

9 Columbian Exchange Using your device, textbook, or dictionary, look up the term Columbian Exchange Create a memory clue or use the word in a sentence   Definition:  A transfer of goods, ideas, and creatures between the Old and New Worlds cause by European explorers.

10 Mercantilism Using your device, textbook, or dictionary, look up the term Mercantilism  Create a memory clue or use the word in a sentence    Definition:  The economic idea that wealth equaled power and that nations should be self sufficient.

11 Triangular Trade Using your device, textbook, or dictionary, look up the term Triangular Trade Create a memory clue or use the word in a sentence     Definition:  The economic system, based on mercantilism, during the 17th and 18th century which Europeans used to make their nations wealthy
