Where is something in relation to other places???

Relative location -- describes where something is located in reference to or compared to other things around it. USE these words: A. north, south, east, west B. northwest, northeast, southwest, southeast C. central D. 12 miles north NOT these words: A. above, below, over, under, next to, beside, near B. close to, around, touching, borders, next to C. in, within, by middle, between, center D. 12 miles from, away from

 Compare city to city, state to state, country to country.  M any other comparisons that may be made include:  using rivers, lakes, other geographic features (mountains, bodies of water, deserts, valleys, etc.)  m ake sure they aren’t too broad –  “ New Jersey is west of the Atlantic Ocean” is too broad [lots of things are west of the Atlantic Ocean]  “ Illinois is southwest of Lake Michigan, USA” is correct. DO NOT compare… Apples to oranges!!!

Always specify the place’s location  Helena, Montana  New Jersey, USA  Paris, France  Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada  Pechora Basin, Russia  Lake Victoria, East-Central Africa  BE SPECIFIC!

And Now…

Practice Time Identify ONE relative location description for each of these places: –(1 – 5) Denver, Cody, Kansas City, Atlanta, Tallahassee –(6 – 10) The Grand Canyon, Chesapeake Bay, Cape Fear, The Florida Keys, Mt. Rushmore –(11 – 15) Germany, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Honduras, Gabon
