Relative location -- describes where something is located in reference to or compared to other things around it. USE these words: A. north, south, east, west B. northwest, northeast, southwest, southeast C. central D. 12 miles north NOT these words: A. above, below, over, under, next to, beside, near B. close to, around, touching, borders, next to C. in, within, by middle, between, center D. 12 miles from, away from
Compare city to city, state to state, country to country. M any other comparisons that may be made include: using rivers, lakes, other geographic features (mountains, bodies of water, deserts, valleys, etc.) m ake sure they aren’t too broad – “ New Jersey is west of the Atlantic Ocean” is too broad [lots of things are west of the Atlantic Ocean] “ Illinois is southwest of Lake Michigan, USA” is correct. DO NOT compare… Apples to oranges!!!
