Function Transports substances O2, CO2, hormones, waste, etc. Regulate pH Restrict fluid loss at injury site Defense against pathogens Stabilize body.
BLOOD. Physical Characteristics  Color depends on oxygen content  8% of body weight  L in females, L in males  pH – slightly alkaline.
Blood Cells in the body are fixed within tissues and must have nutrients and oxygen brought to them and waste removed. The blood is classified as a fluid.

Chapter 19 The Blood

Hematocrit

Substances in Blood Plasma Water Albumins Globulins Fibrinogen Electrolytes Nutrients Gases Regulatory substances Waste products

Red Blood Cell Production Terms Hemopoiesis Erythropoietin – secreted by kidneys Erythropoiesis Hypoxia Polycythemia

Hemoglobin

RBC Regulation

Types of WBC’s Granular and Agranular

Functions of WBC’s Neutrophils – Phagocytosis using lysozymes, defensins, and oxidants. Eosinophils - destroy parasites and combat histamines. Basophils – release heparin, histamine, and serotonin. Monocytes – Phagocytosis, clean cellular debris. Lymphocytes – B-cells, T-cells and NK-cells.

Diapedesis of WBC’s

WBC Terms Leukocytosis – above normal Leukopenia – below normal Phagocytosis Differential count
