Spanish Colonial Timeline 1772 Efforts to Christianize the Native Americans fails. San Antonio, the largest settlement becomes the capital. 1682 Spaniards establish the first Texas mission at Corpus Cristi de la Ysleta. 1716 Spanish establish six missions and one presidio in East Texas. 1718 Founding of San Antonio. Mission San Antonio de Valero (The Alamo) is founded. 1690 Father Damian Massanet sets up the first Spanish mission in East Texas.
