10 Life was not easy in the missions. Many Missions were isolated and located in hostile Native American territory.

11  Friars recruited Indians to live and work in the Mission  Work consisted of farming, building and repairing buildings and churches  Performed the majority of the physical labor and upkeep of the mission  Indians also had to attend church and learn Spanish and Catholicism

12  In charge of running the mission  Took charge of the “religious conversion” of the Indians  Brutal Tactics were often used  Recruited Indians into the mission  Helped with livestock

13  Provided protection to both Indians and Priests inside the mission  Helped “recruit” Indians to the Mission  Helped with repairs and livestock upkeep  Often brought their families with them to the mission

14  Indians were not motivated to convert to Christianity and live Mission life  Indians were often mistreated  Epidemics broke out in the Missions sickening many Indians  Location of Mission was often isolated and built in hostile Indian territory
