Ser & Estar

Ser & estar Both ser and estar mean “to be.”

Ser Ser is used to explain long- lasting characteristics. Example: Soy una muchacha. (I am a girl.)

Estar Estar is used to describe a temporary state or condition. Example: Estoy enfermo. (I am sick.)

Estar is used to describe ALL location (even if the location is permanent) with one exception. Example: Charlotte está en Carolina del Norte.

Use Ser when talking about: origin: Where something/someone is from long-term characteristics height Official event locations name personality hair & eye color Time

Use estar when talking about: Where something is located (permanently & temporarily) Where someone is located (permanently & temporarily) temporary conditions sickness mood temporary emotions

Ser yo soy nosotros somos tú eres él/ella/Ud. es ellos/ellas/Uds. son
