Presentation transcript:

S. Randjbar-Daemi ICTP and some of its major achievements in the last 5 years

Brain Storming Meeting and 5 Year Strategic Plan Five areas were identified but many other initiatives were added which were not in the 5- year Plan ( e.g. Joint Programme in Medical Physics)

1. Joint PhD Programme: ICTP science would be enriched by a formal PhD programme as a natural extension of the current Diploma programme

1964 and : Science was produced mostly in North America and Europe. With the exception a few countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America these continents did not contribute much, Now?

Scientific Output

Mathematics

The demand on ICTP is increasing but its resources are limited. These countries have reached sufficient level of scientific productivity to share ICTP’s experience by hosting and mirroring its spirit and activities

ICTP Branches 2. The reach of ICTP’s science would be extended by establishing regional centres of excellence in developing countries, First Choice: S. P. Brazil ( ICTP-SAIFR) Why?

More Branches Mexico, Turkey, China, Rwanda, Bureaucratic hurdles seem to be overcome,…

More Requests Iran, Argentina, Ecuador, Indonisia,...

3. Expanding Research Areas The range of ICTP’s science would be increased by strengthening existing research sections and adding new ones, particularly in Energy, Quantitative Biology and Computing Sciences.

4.E-Learning 4. ICTP would play a leading role in developing improved internet-based techniques and new e- learning methods to further supplement and replace the traditional classroom.

5.Fund Raising A new Institute Advancement Office (IAO) would seek new funding and support opportunities

Fernando of course will face new challenges in responding to growing needs and demands. We should all wish him Good Luck and Continuous Success!
