Presentation transcript:

Melanoma By Liam Hanrahan

What is Melanoma? Melanoma is the fourth most common cancer, usually appearing as a pigmented skin lesion. Australia has the world’s highest incidence rate for melanoma.

How is it caused? Experts believe that many cases of melanoma are caused by excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Scientists once thought that UVA rays were the main cause of melanoma. Now they think that UVB rays are also involved. That's why it is important to use a sunscreen.

How does Melanoma effect the human body? Melanoma is a malignant tumor that originates in melanocytes located in the epidermis. These melanocytes are cells that produce melanin, the pigment that colors the skin, and protects it from harmful ultra-violet rays.

How can we protect ourselves from Melanoma? We can protect ourselves from melanoma by simply wearing sunscreen when in the sun. Also lutein can protect us.
