Read the passage of text on the left hand side. Whilst doing so, take down any key notes or key pieces of information and be ready to feedback to the rest of the class. Fossil fuels can be extremely damaging to our environment. When burning fossil fuels many harmful gases are given off. Such as: Carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide. Carbon dioxide is thought to be affecting our planet, causing something called Global warming. This is when the average temperature of the Earth gradually rises. Scientist believe that humans burning fossil fuels and releasing carbon dioxide is the main cause of global warming. Therefore we need to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide we release into the environment. Student Reading Activity

Data Analysis Complete the following sentences Humans mostly use fossil fuels for ______________. ______% of fossil fuels are used for powering cars. ______% is used for heating our homes. Farming and agriculture uses ____% of our fossil fuels.

Useless Lv3:Identify percentages on a pie chart. Lv4: Describe methods of reducing energy use. Lv5: Explain why we need to reduce the amount of fossil fuels we use. Entrance Activity Key Terms Energy efficient Fossil fuels Greenhouse effect Carbo dioxide Emissions Insulating Draw a concept map to demonstrate wat you now about energy and fuels thus far.

Think. Pair. Share Think of one way we can reduce the amount of fossil fuels we are using. Talk to your partner about your idea and whether it will reduce the amount of Carbon dioxide being produced. Share your ideas with the whole class in a group discussion. Share- Pair- Think- Learning Activity

Energy Efficient Homes

Learning Activity “Cut & Paste” Attempt the cut and paste activity sheet. You need to arrange the different sentences into two or three sections: E.g. methods of reducing the amount of carbon dioxide we use.

No Green house Effect Our Planet is heated up every day by light rays from our sun. The majority of these light rays hit earth and then reflect off into space.

With Green House Effect Due to the large amount fossil fuels we’ve been burning our atmosphere has now become full of Carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide acts like a blanket around the earth, keeping the light rays in. These light rays return back to earth and raise the average temperature of the earth’s surface. Learning Activity

Lv4- Describe what the green house effect is using very basic terminology. Lv5- Explain in detail how carbon dioxide traps heat and causes the green house effect. Lv6- Link to two pictures together and explain why it is called the green house effect.

Plenary Write a letter to the school. Write a letter to the head teacher of the school, Mr Campbell, telling him about what you’ve learnt today and why we need to make the school more energy efficient. You may wish to include: Why we need to be energy efficient. How the school can become more energy efficient. Why you feel this is an important subject.
