Greenhouse Effect

Greenhouse Effect Definition: process by which gases in the atmosphere (water vapor and carbon dioxide) absorb thermal energy and radiate it back to Earth.

Greenhouse Effect Explained
Allows solar energy to enter, but prevents thermal energy from escaping Provides a “blanket” for Earth Has the same function as a greenhouse for plants

Radiation Balance The amount of energy received by the sun must be about equal to the amount of energy returned to space in order for Earth to be liveable. Solar energy is “re-radiated” back into space as thermal energy The amount of incoming energy MUST equal the amount of outgoing energy in order to maintain radiation balance.

Global Warming Definition: Gradual increase of average global temperature Possible causes of global warming according to scientists: Burning of fossil fuels Deforestation As a result, global climate patterns, plants, and animals can be effected
