IB ECONOMICS EXAMS: MAY 2016 Paper 1: Monday 2 nd May 2016 (pm) Paper 2: Tuesday 3 rd May 2016 (pm) Paper 3: Tuesday 3 rd May 2016 (pm) These exams are right at the start of the IB exam testing period.

NEW APPROACH TO HOMEWORK In Grade 12, your homework will consist of two parts each time: Section A: Past IB Papers – Specific Question This will be a real IB past paper. You will complete one specified question, usually with at least two or more different parts. Every homework task this year will always feature at least 1 question from a past IB exam paper. Section B: Range of Different Activities: Articles on News & Current Events with associated questions/essays. Role Plays, Oral Presentations, Video Presentations. (as last year) Work on IB Commentaries (this will be the main focus from Nov to Feb)

MARKING & GRADING HOMEWORK TASK 1 SECTION A: IB Questions Marked by the Teacher, with IB grade converted to the Apsen Grading system for an A to F mark. SECTION B: ATL Grades (not a summative / formative grade) Consistently will only be awarded if all parts of the homework are completed comprehensively and on time. Frequently will be awarded if most parts completed and submitted on time. You will be asked to present your homework to the teacher on the day of submission to receive your ATL grade. BUT WHAT IS THE INCENTIVE TO COMPLETE ALL QUESTIONS IN TASK B: READ ON…….

HOMEWORK REVIEW EXAMS ECONOMIC NEWS & CURRENT EVENTS If only an ATL grade is awarded some students may see little incentive to complete all the associated questions. The exam questions will be very similar to the homework questions. You will be able to use the articles in the exam, but no notes will be permitted. It goes without saying that you must have read all the articles before the exam. The exam questions could be based on comprehension of the articles, economic terms in the article & or a short essay (as practiced for homework) Exam Length: 45 minutes. It will not be a full period exam.

HOMEWORK REVIEW EXAMS IB PAST PAPERS When the Section B, homework is not articles to read, (eg: a role play), you will instead be tested on the IB question (Section A) you had for homework. In this situation you will have the opportunity to review the IB question for Homework. You will be expected to do the question for an ATL grade. However, you will then be tested on the IB question in the Homework exam period.

IB ECONOMIC COMMENTARIES As you can see from the homework schedule the first IB commentary for homework will be in November this year. On return from the winter vacation in January, the focus of homework will be exclusively on commentaries until March, in addition to IB past papers. The reason it is best to leave commentaries for the January to March period is that we will not finish international economics until February. In addition selected articles from 2016, always creates a very positive vibe with IB markers. However, some articles we used in the junior year can still be used (mainly from microeconomics) The commentaries submitted in your junior year will be reviewed later in the academic year. Furthermore your knowledge progressively develops throughout the course. Writing your commentaries later in the course, has its advantages.
