THE POWER OF POSITIVE REGARD Karyn Harvey, Ph.D.

The Effects of Exclusion – Computer game study The Effects of Rejection- Photo of ex’s study Think of someone who Accepts you as you are !

Unconditional Positive Regard The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change. Carl Rogers

The Power of Positive Regard  Mice and Bob Rosenthal  Signs were put up for experimenters “Smart Rats” “Dumb Rats” – All rats were actually the same  Experimenters had rats run mazes –  Big difference between the performances – Smart rats ran mazes twice as fast!!

Carol Dwek, Ph.d. “How you see someone determines how they are able to see themselves!” Teachers who thought they had gifted children got a significantly better performance from classes they were told were “average”. Even though they were the same!

The POWER OF “NOT YET”!  Flip the script to the greatness of the PROCESS  What hasn’t been accomplished yet instead of what has been failed at  Effort IS Achievement!  Hope trumps everything  Do we shut people down By being too goal oriented?

“ASSUME INTELLIGENCE” William Stillman

Multiple types of Intelligence – Dr. Howard Gardner  Visual-Spatial - think in terms of physical space, as do architects and sailors. Very aware of their environments. They like to draw, do jigsaw puzzles, read maps, daydream.  Bodily-kinesthetic - use the body effectively, like a dancer or a surgeon. Keen sense of body awareness. They like movement, making things, touching. They communicate well through body language.  Musical - show sensitivity to rhythm and sound. They love music, but they are also sensitive to sounds in their environments.

 Interpersonal - understanding, interacting with others. They have many friends, empathy for others, awareness of others. Great with people and animals!  Intrapersonal - understanding one's own interests, goals. They tend to shy away from others. They're in tune with their inner feelings; they have wisdom, intuition and self motivation  Linguistic - using words effectively. These learners have highly developed auditory skills and often think in words. They like reading, playing word games, making up poetry or stories. They love to talk!  Logical -Mathematical - reasoning, calculating. Numbers make more sense than words! They like to order things and understand things in sequences.
