Office of Occupational Safety, Health, and Environment Transportation Security Administration: The Federal Electronics Challenge and the PC Refresh Project

Transportation Security Administration  As a component of Department of Homeland Security, TSA has a mission to protect the Nation’s transportation systems to ensure freedom of movement for the people and commerce

Information Technology Division Role  Determine information technology requirements to support the Federal security employees at US airports  Develop implementation strategy  Acquire systems  Manage and direct the installation of systems  Maintain and operate systems  Keep systems current with technology improvements

Office of Occupational Safety, Health, and Environment’s (OSHE) Role  Protect communities and the natural environment affected by our transportation security activities  Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal environmental requirements by assessing and mitigating, where applicable, the impact of TSA activities  Ensure TSA efforts as an environmental steward by providing support and technical assistance to all functional levels within TSA

The Federal Electronics Challenge  TSA became a member of the FEC in 2005, and OSHE and IT are working together to make TSA a successful environmental steward  TSA received the Silver-level FEC Award in 2007

TSA PC Refresh Project  The PC Refresh Project was led by Project Manager Karen Nason, and was assisted by management consultants from Apptis, Inc. and Program Management Associates, Inc.  The project began in August 2006 and was completed in March 2007.

The Scope  Replace all computers that are no longer in use with environmentally responsible and energy efficient systems  Coordinate the installation and transfer of existing data at more than 450 airports and TSA Headquarters  Load approved software and training applications for selected systems  Pickup and wipe the data of computer systems that are no longer in use  Ensure that the disposal of unused equipment meets or exceeds Federal guidelines and requirements

The Provider  Based on technology, cost, and disposal methods offered, we selected Dell products and service through one of their certified small business partners, Eyak Tek  TSA also selected Dell’s Asset Recovery Service (ARS), a safe and secure method by which Dell retrieves and transports all of TSA’s used computers and either refurbishes the equipment for resale or recycles the equipment  100% of the new equipment Dell provided for TSA met the EPEAT Silver level standard
