XPSP2 “Basic Gotchas” Security Center “Welcome” –May be confusing –Gives a “No Antivirus” warning for machines with SAV which have NOT been patched for service pack 2 Internet Explorer –“Pop-up” blocking may hide valid pop-up windows –Active-X Security hides other scripted HTML events such as “download” pop-ups or flash media. Firewall –Now enabled (by default) –All ports are restricted (by default) Any pre-SP2 rules carry over (old exceptions) –Users will be prompted on action to take when trying to establish outbound connections. (ex: If a user opens Meeting Maker, the system will inform them that ‘mm.exe’ is attempting to access the internet, and will ask them what they want to do, “Keep Blocking”, “Unblock”, “Ask Me Later”. In this case the appropriate answer is to Unblock, which will create a firewall exception rule allowing Meeting Maker to communicate on the requested port). –**Note: Only “Administrators” can create exceptions. Antivirus –For SAV clients, the OS will not recognize your Antivirus installation and will warn that it cannot determine the state of your Antivirus program. You have two options, either specify that you will “Self Manage” your antivirus program, or install the SP2 patch for SAV (it will require the original installation CD). Program Compatibility –Service Pack 2 (obviously) modifies the system/version, therefore some applications that monitor or interact directly with the system may no longer work properly Laptops must be on AC or XPSP2 won’t load Screen dump (blue screen) can occur as a result of an updated driver in SP2 Update drivers and reboot computer prior to SP2 update

Some programs seem to stop working after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2

Programs that are known to experience a loss of functionality when they run on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer
