Unit 3 Day 11 (Jim Crow) Quote: “I am not ashamed of having fought on the side of slavery – a soldier fights for his country – right or wrong – he is not responsible for the political merits of the cause he fights in. The South was my country.” - John H Mosby (Virginia) Focus Question(s): What were the most significant impacts of Reconstruction policies on America? Justify. Jim Crow The Freedman’s Bureau will be created in This organization was supposed to help newly freed slaves with housing and food, education, healthcare and employment.

Southern states passed “Black Codes” that would limit the blacks’ right to own property, conduct business, buy and rent land, and move freely through public spaces. Not working became a crime (vagrancy laws).

Sharecropping became common among blacks in the South. They would rent land from a plantation owner and in exchange the plantation owner took a portion of the crops.

Southern states also passed “Jim Crow laws” that would create separate facilities for blacks including schools, restaurants, parks, and public transportation.

Reconstruction officially ended in The South was physically rebuilt but many racial and political issues remained.
