Annotated Bibliography Philosophical Journey research

Annotated Bibliography  Annotation is the process by which you emphasize important information in a document  You create annotated bibliography to help organize thoughts and gain familiarity with research material  Ensures that the sources you are using are relevant and will benefit you during the research process

What Does An Annotated Bibliography Do?  A good annotated bibliography encourages you to think critically about the content of the works you are using, and their relation to your own research and ideas.  Proves you have read and understand your sources.  Establishes your work as a valid source and you as a competent researcher.  Provides a way for others to decide whether a source will be helpful to their research if they read it.

How to Make Your Annotated Bibliography 1. Prepare a Works Cited entry following an established format (APA) 2. Evaluate credibility of author/source 3. Compose a short summary of the article 4. Analysis of source using CRAPP test. Discuss how helpful this source will be to your research and why. Refer to the handout for more information.

Proper APA documentation (works cited)  Please refer to OWL, and write a correct works cited entry. DO NOT rely on a generator such as “easybib.com” or what is provided for you in the data bases, which is often incorrect.

Source Credibility (Ethos) Information about the author (or publication if there is no stated author). Why is this person or publication qualified?

Example- with author  Source Credibility: Ming Ming Chiu is a Charles R. Hicks Professor of Educational Psychology and Research Methodology. He studies the conversations and interactions between students in classrooms. From these observations, he gathers data regarding teachers' and classmates' social metacognitive processes and their affect on conversations in the classroom. Chiu’s studies and research has found that greater economic inequality among students widens the mathematics achievement gap among the richest and the poorest students.

Example – Publication with no stated author  Source Credibility: NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California is managed by the California Institute of Technology under a contract that has been renewed every five years since As NASA’s only Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC), it is dedicated to the robotic exploration of space.

Summary  One single-spaced paragraph which addresses all major points in the source. Identify the primary thesis in the article, its purpose and major idea, before you summarize the content.

example  Summary: As a press release to various media sources, this article serves to inform news outlets about NASA’s technology, FINDER, that recently aided in the rescue of individuals after a natural disaster and persuade them to go the Virginia Task Force One Training Facility to see the demonstration of FINDER. Created in junction by the Department of Homeland Security’sDirectorate and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the device “Finding Individuals for Disasters and Emergency Response” (FINDER) features radar-technology in order to detect even the most miniscule of human heartbeats and movements through massive quantities of rubble. Following the earthquake in Nepal early this year, teams of rescuers were deployed along with prototypeFINDER devices, and with it, they saved four men trapped underneath the rubble. This device will be debuting in commercial enterprise after the demonstration of FINDER on May 7.

Significance/Analysis  How can you use this research in your paper?  Source Evaluation/CRAPP Test: Address bias, accuracy, date of publication, etc.

example  Analysis: Although this source is credible, the particular article’s purpose may just be to attract newspapers and other media outlets to participate and attend the demonstration of FINDER that was held in VA. Because the demonstration was also created to announce FINDER’s transition into the commercial market, the attention the media would attract from around the world would inspire consumers, like rescue teams, to buy the product, resulting in a personal gain for bothNASA and the DHS. However, this does not deter from the accuracy of the information that was released. It was created very recently, in May 2015, almost directly after the rescue of the four men. My topic concerns federal budgets and whether they should be focused more towardsNASA and space exploration, or towards the domestic issues on Earth. This article relates because it is about a piece of technology created by NASA that has actually aided with threatening situations on Earth, showing that space technology is also relevant here. Because theJPL is federally funded, the information is accurate; the website is also a.gov link. I can use this information because it contains facts about the function of FINDER device and how it has helped to rescue four lives in the case of an earthquake. This can be utilized in my argument by saying that this single device is negligible compared to the great sum of money NASA has collectively spent without a practical set of results (which is supported by another one of my sources).
