You should be able to summarize the role of enzymes in chemical reactions

 diY8

 Chemical Reactions change substances into new substances.  In this reaction, lactose is a substrate. A substrate is what is acted on by the enzyme.

 Activation Energy: the amount of energy needed to start a chemical reaction

 How much activation energy was needed to do the difficult task we talked about?

 Enzymes (specialized proteins in our bodies) LOWER the activation energy of specific reactions.  Therefore ENZYMES make it easier for chemical reactions to occur in our bodies.

 When an enzyme is involved reactions can happen much faster.

 Each enzyme can only help along one reaction. This depends on the shape of the active site.

 How are enzymes involved in chemical reactions?  What is activation energy?  How do enzymes affect activation energy?  What is an enzyme’s active site?  What do we mean when we say an enzyme is specific?

 catalase 2H 2 O  2H O 2  What is the enzyme? What does it do in the reaction?  What is the substrate?  What are the products?

 Question: How does pH influence the activity of the enzyme catalase?  catalase 2H 2 O  2H O 2  Independent variable:  Dependent variable:  Control group:  Constants:
