PROFESSIONAL LEARNING ESOL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS. ESOL Teacher: Anastasiya Ard

WORKSHOP AGENDA 1.Home Language Survey; 2.W-APT – Purpose, Interpretation of Results.

Georgia’s Language Assistance Rule To comply with the NCLB, GaDOE Title III Department in partnership with the OCR, revised the state’s language assistance rule which includes: 1.Screening for eligibility services 2.Providing instructional support 3.Assessing English Language Learners annually

What is the W-APT?  The W-APT is the state-adopted screening instrument to determine if a student is eligible to receive language assistance services.  LEA must administer the W-APT if a student answers “yes” to any of the language questions:

What are the uses for W-APT Scores?  identifies students (those scoring below 5.0) who may be candidates for ESOL services;  determines the academic English language proficiency level of newcomers to a school or to the U.S. school system in order to determine appropriate levels and amounts of instructional services; and  may serve as an indicator or guidance when assigning students identified as ELLs to one of the 3 tiers for ACCESS for ELLs.

How many times can you administer W-APT to an ELL? Just once and within the first 30 days of attending school!

 W-APT is aligned to the WIDA ELP Standards  All 4 domains assessed: Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing  Assessment forms are developed for grade clusters Pre K-K  W-APT is not a tiered assessment  Individually administered and fully adaptive

Service  ESOL has 6 approved instructional delivery models: Pull-out Push-in Cluster center Resource center / Laboratory Scheduled class period Alternative approved in advance
