In the exam, a magazine article must have a headline. In the exam, a magazine article must be written in columns. In the exam, the audience will always be the general public.

How did you do? 5/4 – Fantastic, you already have a great understanding of the conventions. 3/2 – Well, there’s still a way to go before you’ll be achieving that A*. Listen carefully to all advice. 0/1 – Oh no! At the moment your understanding of magazines is poor and you need to do some intense revision for that A/A*.

The kinds of articles Formal newspaper (writing about an incident etc) Chronological order Headline Past tense Third person Quotes from experts/witnesses First para – Who? What? When? Where? How? ‘Lively’ newspaper/magazine article Non-chronological Headline Past or present tense Third or first person Quotes from experts/witnesses First paragraph-refer to topic Each paragraph builds up the argument or opinion Link the last paragraph back to the first

How to make writing ‘lively’ Vary sentence length and punctuation Address the reader – questions/you/asides Include humour Personal experiences List of threes and contrasts

Marking Set yourself a target for each of the marking criteria E.g. Content and organisation(13) I need to… SSPS (7)

Paired Work Write an A/A* success criteria for this task.

Food Glorious Food? Bangers and mash, roast dinners, sponge pudding and custard. Typical British cooking. Or is it? Burger and chips, pizzas and Kentucky Fried Chicken. Are these now not the staple dishes of the British diet? Are we facing a crisis in Britain, with people preferring a quick ready meal in front of the television, rather than a traditional Sunday lunch at the dinner table?

Write the next paragraph, cramming it with techniques, whilst continuing the argument. Ready meals and fast food have killed off traditional British food Sunday roast/fish and chips still enormously popular Celebrity chefs often promote non-British food Credit crunch has seen a surge of traditional British meals using slow cooker ‘Fad’ diets suggest traditional British food is fattening etc Britain is a multi-cultural society, ‘foreign’ food is now typically British (curry)

Plenary Peer assess your partner’s work, using the success criteria to award achievement and set targets.
