He loved puzzles, and, unwittingly, turned into a real puzzle. How? We will talk further…

The childhood and youth of Lewis Carroll ( ) The story of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, alias Lewis Carroll was an English writer, mathematics, logic, philosopher and photographer, starts from January 27, He was born into a British family parish priest in the village of Daresbury, Cheshire. Even as a child, Charles was manifested interest in the subjects with which he will deal with throughout life: mathematics, theology and the arts.

In the early years Charles really wanted to become an artist. He painted mostly pencil and charcoal. Having lots of brothers and sisters, he tried in every way to entertain them. Charles invented games for children, wrote stories, which are then read to them at bedtime. He "published" for younger brothers and sisters handwritten journals "Mish-Mash", which they loved. In them he wrote his first poems and stories and illustrated. The childhood and youth of Lewis Carroll ( )

The school years ( ) In 12 years, the future Lewis Carroll enrolled in a private school near Richmond. But there he studied briefly. The school was small and could not able to give the child a decent education. A year later, he entered the school Rugby. There he showed his ability in mathematics and theology. Lewis graduated from College with honors in two majors: mathematics and classical languages.

Teaching time L. Carroll ( ) In his free teaching time Lewis wrote science books and pamphlets on logic and mathematics. The most popular of them: "Algebraic analysis of the fifth book of Euclid" (1858, 1868), "Notes on algebraic geometry" (1860), "an Elementary guide to the theory of determinants" (1867), "Euclid and his modern rivals (1879), "Mathematical curiosities" (1888, 1893), "Symbolic logic" (1896).

Changed the name Nickname "Carroll" the boy came up during childhood, when he began to write his first poems. The name Lewis Carroll formed from the real name of the author Charles Lutwidge. The writer found analogs his name in Latin, and then changed the names of the places and again translated them into English. So from the Charles H. Lutwidge Dodgson he became known worldwide by Lewis Carroll.

Even when training Carroll continued to be creative. One day, he posted a series of pictures in the newspapers of the time. After Revision rejected his drawings, he took up photography. In those days it was difficult Occupation: wet collodion process, which was used at the time, considered the most difficult way today. In his diary he wrote: ". The camera lens and the other will cost £ 15, at least this is my only fun, and I think it deserves to be taken seriously." Photography in the life of Lewis Carroll

He was almost a quarter-century photography. During this time he put a lot of famous and interesting people of his time - Ellen Terry, Alfred Tennyson, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Thomas Huxley, Faraday, and many others. The author will always ask their models to sign the back cover. In the early 80s by Lewis Carroll stopped using it, saying that he now has no interest. To this day remained about 1000 photographs by Lewis. Photo of the Galla Tennyson (son of poet Alfred Tennyson)

Familiarity with the Liddell family Acquaintance of the family Liddell with Carroll occurred April 25, 1856, when Lewis was taking pictures of the Cathedral and met the family on a walk. In subsequent years he became a close friend of Liddelow. On 4 July 1862 Carroll in a boating told 10- year-old Alice Liddell and her sisters fairy story, which later became world-famous under the name of "Alice's adventures in Wonderland". After three years, this entertaining story was published for the first time. It earned him worldwide popularity. Photo of the Alice Liddell

Lewis Carroll was the author of many inventions, in particular of games that still play in the UK. One of its most popular games were "Doublets" or "Word links". The journey of Lewis Carroll in Russia (1867) In 1867 Carroll for a few months, went on a trip to Russia. Despite the fact that Carroll was not fond of traveling and its most distant trips were visits to relatives, in 1867, he went on a trip to Russia. It was his only departure from England. In those days in England about Russia knew little and was accepted to go to European countries: France, Italy, Switzerland, Greece. Russia, he visited together with Henry Prilidiano.

The trip was timed to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of priestly service of the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan of Moscow Filaret. It was celebrated on August 17 in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra and was celebrated throughout Russia. There is a theory that this trip was spontaneous. The reason for the trip

That saw the travelers? Lewis and Henry were College friends of Christ Church. They kept diaries of travel, in which were recorded the main event. Carroll wrote a diary for myself and not going to publish, but after 37 years after the death of the author published it. In the diary, the author describes tourist travel experience, notes on meetings and events, a separate Russian phrases. The main purpose of the trip is to establish theological contacts between the Anglican and the Orthodox Church.

The last years of his life Carroll ( ) Teaching is not fun to Lewis Carroll: this class was nothing more than just earning a living. The students didn't like the subjects, which was led by Professor the lectures, which he read were incredibly dull. But on weekends and holidays Carroll was not to know. He was transformed, revived, was engaged in a favorite photograph was invented, invented more and more new puzzles.

The continuation of a fabulous story about Alice was written in 1871, and in 1872 "Alice in Wonderland" was first published. In 1876, was published a fantastic poem "the Hunting of the Snark".
