2  Get a Gold Literature book.  Turn to page 58.  The picture is of Queen Elizabeth I, the quote is from her as well.  Write down 2-3 facts about Queen Elizabeth I based on the picture, or from the book, or internet.  Be ready to share.

3  Ruled England for 45 years (1558-1603)  Encouraged learning and creativity of the Renaissance.  The daughter of Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn.  After the death of her half sister, Mary I, Elizabeth was named queen.  Elizabeth reunited the country by fending off foreign threats, and bringing peace and prosperity.  Earned the peoples love  She made England a major European power in politics and commerce.  She spoke many languages and encouraged the development of theatre.

4  People of the Renaissance were known for their great interests and achievements in literature, in art and in science.  The Renaissance began the fourteenth century.  People witnessed the birth of the Modern World.  Renaissance scholars were interested in all aspects of classical culture.  The introduction of the printing press in the fifteenth century helped the spread of learning.

5  The Renaissance spirit appeared in England as early as the days of Chaucer but was interrupted by the War of the Roses.  The Rennaissance took root in England in the time of King Henry VIII.  His daughter, Elizabeth I, came to the throne in 1558.  The next hundred years saw a period of remarkable literary achievement in England.

6  Nonfiction writers usually wrote in prose.  Fiction writers wrote poetry.  Elizabethan poets often wrote sonnets, fourteen line poems with a special and fixed form.  Edmund Spenser, John Milton, and William Shakespeare wrote in sonnets.  Shakespeare is most famous as a dramatist. He wrote comedies, tragedies, and historical plays. He is widely recognized all over the world.

7  James I died in 1625, and his son, Charles I, became king.  People did not like Charles I and wanted him removed.  In 1649 his opponents beheaded him.  For a decade, England was without a king.  The ruling party governed by religious authority.  The leaders suppressed expression and individual thoughts and ideas that clashed with beliefs.  The English Renaissance came to an end.

8  A major form in British poetry  They are difficult to write because they require order and discipline.  They have exactly fourteen lines.  They have a fixed rhythm and rhyme scheme that must be followed  Some are divided into parts  All sonnets present personal feelings and thoughts about various aspects of life.  Common subjects are love, grief, and relationships

9  Write a word such as love, grief, or relationships on a sheet of paper.  Write ten sentences that explore your feelings about the subject.  Choose one sentence that might be expanded into a poem

10  The theme of a poem is its main idea or central message.  When reading two poems, by the same author, you learn more by comparing and contrasting their themes.  1. Identify the theme.  2. Look at similarities and differences of the two poems.
