2 Lewis Carroll Charles Lutwidge Dodgson   (ˈtʃɑrlz ˈlʌtwɪdʒ ˈdɒdʒsən)  (27/01/1832 – 14/02/1898) was an English writer, mathematician,  logician, Anglican deacon and photographer.  ******************************** deacon  [ʹdi:k(ə)n]  священник, дьякон

3 His most famous writings are:  ”Alice's Adventures in Wonderland ” (published in 1865) “Through the Looking-Glass” (published in 1871) "The Hunting of the Snark“ (published in 1876) - all examples of the genre of  literary nonsense. 

4 From a young age, Dodgson wrote poetry and short stories, sending them to various magazines. Between 1854 and 1856, his works appeared in the national publications, most of them were humorous, sometimes satirical. In 1856 he published his first piece of work (a romantic poem called "Solitude“) under the name that would make him famous – Lewis Carroll ***************************************** solitude ['sɔlɪt(j)uːd] одиночество, уединение, уединённые, безлюдные места

5 Dodgson worked in the fields of geometry, algebra, mathematical logic, producing nearly a dozen books under his real name. Dodgson also developed new ideas in algebra. He worked as the Mathematical Lecturer at Christ Church, an occupation that gave him some financial security. He wrote several mathematical works, f.e. “A New Theory of Parallels"

7 He is considered one of the best amateur photographers of his time, particularly in his images of Victorian children. He also photographed friends, family and noted figures of his day, including Alfred Lord Tennyson, and members of the Rossetti family. **************************************** amateur ['æmətə] любитель, непрофессионал
