Building Monitor Information Dominican University of California March 2016

What is your role as a Building Monitor? Encourage occupants evacuate the building Assist in accounting of evacuees Communicate emergency information to Fire Department Senior Officer in Charge (SOC) Communicating emergency procedures to those on your floor/department

What's the time investment? One 90 minute Emergency Procedures Training every spring One evacuation drill per year (15-20 minutes)

Evacuation Procedures Wear vest, bring pad/pencil Announce “Evacuate now!” Bang on locked doors and announce “Evacuate the building!” Close doors of cleared suites Look in all areas, including bathrooms

Evacuation Procedures Keep mental track of those that refuse to leave Note injured and people needing assistance Do not use elevators Evacuate yourself if conditions are unsafe, such as: Smoke has reduced visibility Active fire on your floor

Assembly Areas

Evacuation Procedures Once you clear your floor, report to assembly area Inform Fire Department of: Missing, Injured, those refusing to evacuate, and hazards observed Keep evacuated persons out of building until the “all clear” Building monitors are not required to provide first aid, perform CPR, search and rescue, or operate fire extinguishers.

Accounting of Evacuees The first to arrive at the assembly area should immediately start collecting information regarding who evacuated. Accept written and verbal accounts from faculty for classrooms Have others sign-in, including phone number Record reports of missing Communicate this info to Fire Dept and Administration.

Disabilities Evacuation Assistants are designated for those known employees and students May need your assistance when clearing the building Move wheelchair bound to top of stairwells A spare wheelchair is currently located in the circulation corral of the library for emergency use. Stair evacuation chairs are located in Bertrand and Guzman.

Be the Eyes and Ears Keep an eye out for: Blocked exits (or combustibles in egress) Locked exits Items blocking sprinkler heads or alarm pulls (within 3 feet) Overloaded electrical outlets Combustibles near heater source Missing evacuation signs Talk to people about safety
