Preparation for the Test of Essential Academic Skills (v. 5) (TEAS)

First things first, you must register and pay to take this exam (it ain’t free sunshine) If you have not done so, contact the test facility immediately at: (next page)

Yes, we have those dates marked on our calendar and we will be opening June 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th, and 8th dates for HCC TEAS-V exam. Those dates will be open by May 15th, 2011 at the website where TEAS candidates can register. We will send you the seating capacity for those dates by May 15th. We plan on opening additional dates for TEAS in the month of June but that I do not know yet. The test will be administered at the following center. West Houston Testing Center Briar Forest Dr. Suite 225 Houston, TX We have a very strict cell phone policy and yes we have lockers but may be not enough for everyone. TEAS exam information and our testing center information can be found at our website at For more information about TEAS testing please follow all the links at our website.

Second thing second, if you have not already done so, order this book today (and read it!): Study Manual for the Test of Essential Academic Skills (Version V) by Assessment Technologies Institute, LLC

Introduction The TEAS is a proctored exam given in paper/pencil or computer based format. The exam measures basic essential skills in academic content area domains of reading, math, science, and English and language usage. The exam is employed to measure the entry-level skills and abilities of nursing program applicants.

Content AreasNumber of Questions Time Limit Reading4858 minutes Mathematics3451 minutes Science5466 minutes English and Language Usage 3434 minutes Total170*209 minutes*

Although the TEAS consists of 170 items, 20 of these items are pretest items used by test administrators for research purposes. The research items are not identified, so you must answer them as if they are counted. (Sorta sucks, right…) Since there are 170 questions given in 209 minutes, you have about 1 minute and 10 seconds to spend on answering each question. Thus…

How you utilize your time during the exam is of critical importance!

Test Taking Strategies Make time your best friend (POOD, easy questions first, watch the clock). Answer the question. (Read the question – what is it asking? Read the answer choices – are you answering the question?) Guessing is not guesswork (eliminate obviously wrong choices, take the best guess, increase probability of success). Study smart, not hard (squeeze the rock). Prepare, don’t put off (day 0 is now!). Practice makes perfect. (test, test, test…).
