Major events in the development of the United States of America 1776- U.S. declares Independence from Great Britain. The war lasted from 1775-1781. 1787- The constitution was drafted. 1803- Louisiana Purchase provided the U.S. much of the land that formally belonged to the French.

Manifest Destiny Manifest Destiny is the belief that the United States was destined by God to extend from sea to sea? Was this belief justified? Why or Why not? What were the positive and negative effects of this belief?

The Louisiana Purchase Purchased in 1803 by Thomas Jefferson The French sold it to the United States because of war debt.

Back to Texas… Americans were divided on whether to support the annexation of Texas.- LB Directions for the left Brain Activity: Draw a picture that represents no to annexation and then draw another picture that represent support for annexation.

The difference between North and South

Why was there a difference in opinion for North and South? Northerners were against the Annexation of Texas because it would be admitted as a slave state and would tip congressional power to the south. Southern states wanted it because….

Events that spurred Texas to push for annexation. Mexico attacks San Antonio despite having signed the Treaty of Velasco. Texans vote to be annexed in 1845. President John Tyler’s support and offer for the U.S. to pay off the republic’s large debt in exchange for giving its public lands to the government. The popular belief of Manifest Destiny. Texas became the 28th state in 1845.

Mexican attack on San Antonio Directions: Scholars are to read Chap.12 Sec. 1 and create Cornell notes for this section.
