Process of Creating a Website By: Ryan Millevoi and Lauren Gallo

The Site Building Team ► Why is the Site Team so important? -”The strategic importance and project budget for your web efforts will largely determine the size and skill depth of your web site development team.” ► The Core Skills sets required of a Site Team are: Project management Information architecture and user interface design Graphic design for the web Web technology Site production

Initial Planning -Initial planning is as important to the website as all of the coding. -Websites are developed by a group of people to meet the needs of another group of people ► Know and communicate your three goals. -A short statement identifying two or three goals should be the foundation of your web site design. -Include specific strategies around which the web site will be designed. For example, how long the site design, construction, and evaluation periods will be. ► Know Your Audience. - Identify the potential audience for your web site so that you can structure the site design to meet their needs and expectations.

A List of Reminders ► Make a list of reminders consisting things like: Don’t overwrite Make standard before design Be clear on your idea Do the visuals last Be consistent Make sure the users know the point

Knowing Types of Web Sites Why is it important to know what other types of sites there are?  You can get ideas from other sites.  Each site has an idea that could be more appealing to your audience. Examples of Web pages: Static Webpage - change only when a web author manually updates them with a text editor or web editing tool. Dynamic Webpage - can adapt their content or appearance depending on the user’s interactions, changes in data supplied by an application, or as an evolution over time, as on a news web site.

Site Development Process ► Six major stages that you should think through before crafting your final project planning and proposal documents: 1.Site definition and planning 2.Information architecture 3.Site design 4.Site construction 5.Site marketing 6.Tracking, evaluation, and maintenance

Developing a Project Character -The project charter is the planning team’s concise statement of core goals, values, and intent in order to provide the ultimate policy direction for everything that comes next. Production issues: What is the Budget for the site? What is the production schedule for the site, including intermediate milestones and dates? Who are the people or vendors on the development team and what are their responsibilities? How many pages will the site contain? What is the maximum acceptable count under this budget and schedule? What special technical or functional requirements are needed? Who will be responsible for the ongoing support once the site is launched?

Developing a Project Character (cont.) Goals and strategies: What is the mission of your organization? How will creating this web site support your mission? What are the two or three most important goals for the site? Who is the primary audience for the web site? What do you want the audience to think or do after having visited your site? What web-related strategies will you use to achieve those goals? How will you measure the success of your site?
