The Impact of the War

The Impact of the War on Labor  Unemployment fell  Average weekly paychecks rose  Women entered the workforce in record numbers during the war and then were forced out of it after the war  Women and minorities were offered better pay and more challenging jobs during the war

Impact of the war on Agriculture  Farm machinery and fertilizers improved  Crop prices, production and farm income increased  Many farmers were able to pay off their mortgages

Family Life  The number of women juggling work and family (and raising children alone) increased dramatically  The marriage rate increased dramatically, followed by a steep increase in the divorce rate

Returning GIs  GI Bill of Rights dramatically increased the standard of living of many GIs by providing free education and job training, as well as federal loan guarantees for buying homes and farms or starting businesses

Discrimination and Racism of African Americans  Defended their nation by joining the military and working in defense industries but served in segregated units and often given the worse jobs  James Farmer (Write on back), Founder of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE); staged sit-ins and founded committees to improve race relations

Discrimination and Racism of Mexican Americans  Defended their nation by joining the military  The Zoot Suit rebellion against tradition  Zoot Suit Riots in Los Angeles = On June 3, 1943, a number of sailors claimed to have been beaten and robbed by Mexican pachucos. The following evening, a mob of about 200 sailors, tired of boredom and fired up with bigotry, entered East Los Angeles to beat up and strip the clothing off any young Latino male they could find. The fighting continued until June 7th when military commanders declared Los Angeles off limits to military personnel. Many innocent Latinos were injured in the riots.

Japanese Americans  Defended their nation by joining the military  Fought against the forced relocation to internment camps  Founded the (JACL) Japanese Citizens League which sought compensation for those forced to live in internment camps
