A Presentation for Carnival at Abington Park

"Children cannot learn by textbooks and computers alone. They need to experience the real world for themselves if they are truly to understand their role within it and the part they can play in the future " - Real World Learning

Why learn outside?

It makes learning more engaging  Different learning styles can be met  New experiences lead to better cognitive understanding  It develops an interest in the environment and wider surroundings

It makes learning relevant  Abstract concepts become real  learning in a real life context allows children to associate the content with their own experiences

It can nurture creativity and imagination  Allows children to learn in role  Cross curricular nature

What are some issues of outside learning should be considered?  Can be too disorganised  Certain activities can prevent experiences being enjoyed  Outdoor learning may not be associated with units of work

Why Abington park?

Low cost  Free to access area  Only transportation costs need to be considered

It is close  Promotes local pride  Familiar enough to address any phobias of new places  Reduced travel times

It is a great space that:  Is safe and secure  Has wide open spaces  Has essential facilities  Has natural performance areas that link in with our activities

" There is significant research evidence about the effectiveness of Learning Outside the Classroom, particularly Outdoor Learning and residential experiences, in raising achievement and developing attitudes, attributes and skills " - Challenge to Directors of Children’s Services
