Global health A research priority at the UoB

At the University of Bergen.. Development related research, including Global Health is –An important field of research and education –One of UoB’s priority research areas UoB focuses on strategic, organisational and inter-disciplinary measures

Activities in several academic fields Global health research and education takes place at many departments –Global Health – part of work description for 14 academic positions at UoB Some centres focus on global health issues: –The Centre for International Health (CIH) that has 8 professors and an international research school –The HEMIL Centre –The Centre for Women and Gender Research Core staff and temporary positions are also present at other faculties, especially at the Faculty of Social Science

UoB prioritizes resources for global health The UoB has allocated resources for establishing inter- disciplinary centres and masters and PhD programmes in the English language –130 Masters and PhD candidates are currently studying in these fields in the field of global health –Financial resources allocated in regular budgets Additionally, from 1997 – 2003, NOK 5,7 mill was allocated centrally and NOK 3,3 mill from the faculties for a strategic work

Development related research at the UoB The greatest research field of its kind in Scandinavia CIH rated ”excellent” by Norwegian Research Council About 60 research projects are coordinated by UoB –Annual project budget about NOK 44 mill kr (2002) –Financed by the EU, NRC, NUFU, NORAD and UoB

UoB emphasises research related to globally and internationally important themes (research strategy) Development related research and education is one of the over all priorities. Health makes a large proportion of this. –These activities include: Important global and local challenges for poor countries Possibilities and processes for development related to these challenges Human rights, resources, sustainable development Basic biological and clinical research

Several faculties and fields involved The Faculty of Medicine, of Psychology and of Dentistry –Basic biology –Clinical fields –Nursing –Public health –Epidemiology –Nutrition –Tropical medicine

The Faculty of Social Science –Medical anthropology –Health economics –priority areas such as HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Children’s health and Globalization –Cooperation with Centre for Women and Gender Studies and other centres

Interdisciplinary research on poverty related diseases with special emphasis on: Children’s health, especially diarrhoea, respiratory infections and nutrition Reproductive health HIV/AIDS Tuberculosis Other infectious diseases Oral health in a global perspective

Priorities areas within health promotion, disease prevention and treatment Health system and health policy research Development of new interventions Culture and health Health promotion and disease prevention in a global perspective

Regional and international cooperation UoB emphasises the establishing good institutional relations and partnerships globally, and in Norway –Internationally With universities in the south, such as –the University of Dar Es Salaam –Makerere University –Etc –With the Bergen University College –Other Universities in Norway and in Scandinavia
