Texas Homeland Security Conference City of Austin Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management Hurricanes Prior to Hurricanes Katrina/ Rita, the area had not hosted more than evacuees. Hurricane Katrina - 5,500 Evacuees at Convention Center Hurricane Rita - 18,000 Evacuees in 53 Shelters Hurricane Gustav - 1,000 Evacuees in 3 Shelters Hurricane Ike - 5,000 Evacuees in 23 Shelters & 1,000 at Convention Center Under extreme conditions we can house as many as 25,000 evacuees in >75 shelters in the 3 County area!

Texas Homeland Security Conference City of Austin Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management Mega-Shelter - Large facility capable of housing a large number of a people for a short to intermediate period of time. Unlike short-term shelter operations at schools or recreation centers, mega-shelter operations are much more challenging and complex. Current Identified Mega-Shelter Locations Austin Convention Center Palmer Event Center Large Buildings (Limitations may be infrastructure) Provides Many Resources Beyond Basic Needs Social Services Housing Assistance Food Stamps Requires Massive Response for Prolonged Event Government Non-Profits Agencies Volunteer Organizations
