Scatter Diagrams By Emily Sewell

Both these diagrams have positive correlation but the closer the points are the stronger the correlation is.

This Graph has no correlation because there is no trend. The results are very different to each other and don’t have a consistent pattern.

This graph has negative correlation because the points go down to the right in a diagonal.

An easy way to know whether a scatter diagram has positive or negative correlation Positive correlation graphs always have their points going in the direction a tick goes, so just remember: tick direction= positive correlation. Negative Correlation Positive Correlation

How to do the line of best fit The line of best fit should go in the direction that the graphs’ points go. If there is no correlation you can’t do a line of best fit. Do not join up the points just do a single straight line in the direction the points are going. Examples of graphs with the line of best fit:
