Disaster trends and humanitarian response – Are solutions ‘in’ or ‘out’ of the box? October 18, 2011 "Out of the box“ Disaster trends and innovative responses Sarah Bailey

Urbanisation: 50% of worldwide population is urbanised; by 2030, five billion will live in urban areas Climate change: likely to see an increase in disasters – more frequent, greater scale – for which we need to be better prepared. Protracted/repeated crises: nearly 70% of all funding in 2009 went to long-term recipients of humanitarian aid. Global financial crisis: impact on vulnerable populations, more limited aid flows in the future? Trends – disasters and humanitarian response

Common threads: Our ability to adapt and change Whether our system is ‘fit for purpose’ for current and future challenges ‘Grey’ areas How we learn and innovate Are solutions inside or outside of the box? Responding to challenges

Thank you ‘We are caught in a race between the growing size of the humanitarian challenge and our ability to cope’
