March 2016

What is Data2X?  Goal: Promote approaches to close gender data gaps, and increase availability and use of high quality data  Coordinated by the UN Foundation with support from the Hewlett and Gates Foundations  Data2X is a platform, coordinating body; does not collect data  We need a #GenderDataRevolution to alleviate poverty, advance development and achieve gender equality To build programs and policies that improve the lives of women and girls and accelerate global development, we must improve gender

Data2X Work to Date: Mapping Gender Data Gaps  Identified and mapped 28 gender data gaps across five domains  Four types of gender data gaps:  Lacking coverage across countries and/or regular country production  Lacking international standards to allow for comparability  Lacking complexity: Information across domains  Lacking granularity: Detailed datasets allowing for

Data2X Work to Date: Building Partnerships  Building partnerships to fill ‘actionable’ gaps at the global level:  International awareness/momentum  Relative ease of filling the gap  Population coverage (the number of girls and women potentially affected by closing the gap)  Partnerships in six areas:  Civil Registration and Vital Statistics  Women’s Work and Employment  Supply Side Data on Financial Inclusion  Women’s Subjective Well-being and Poverty  Improved Gender Data on US Foreign Assistance Programs  Big Data and

Data2X Work to Date: Our Partnerships

Data2X’s Role in the era of the SDGs  Girls and women are central to the proposed SDG indicators, but many measurement challenges exist.  Ready to Measure study identifies 16 indicators across 8 global goals to kick-start the measurement of a gender baseline for the SDGs.  Looking for partners to pilot the “Ready to Measure” indicators and launch robust gender data collection Achieving the goals requires significantly improving gender data collection and use to monitor the size and pace of progress.

Priorities for 2016  Executing existing partnerships  Supportive colleague and civil society voice for gender data in the official SDG indicators process  Increased strategic communications and advocacy about the importance of gender data for global development and gender equality  Engaging with the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data to ensure gender data is integrated into their
