Each institution chooses its way of legal deposit : either print thesis or ETD: If the legal deposit is electronic, a complete digital version of the dissertation must be registred in STAR and it is described in Theses.fr several copies for preservation, ILL, consultation and microfiches. Description in the Theses Union catalogue (Sudoc) Nowadays… PAPERELECTRONIC

STEP and STAR STEP (signalement des thèses en préparation) = reporting theses in preparation A workflow software tool developed by ABES Aim : Promoting the visibility of French research works It doesn’t guarantee the protection of the thesis subject It is up to the student and the thesis supervisor to ensure that the chosen subject is not similar to a topic that has been already recorded The nationals frameworks17 STAR (signalement des thèses archivage et recherche)=reporting theses supported Also a workflow software tool developed by ABES Aim : To ensure that the deposit document is true to the original which has been validated by the jury Take into account the life-cycle of electronic thesis Manage the document and add it some metadata for increasing its online visibility
A specific set of metadata : TEF TEF = ‘Thèses Electroniques Françaises’, AFNOR standard (French member of ISO) A set of metadata based on Dublin Core Qualified With several ETD adaptations (jury…) Taking into account needs for Preservation Legal status of thesis : METS Rights Using Schematron TEF is not a single XML schema, but a set of schemas gathered by an XML wrapping.
