Indirect object pronouns Today, we are going to be talking about Indirect object pronouns. However, before we do that, let’s review Direct object pronouns!

Direct object pronouns What is a direct object? –The direct object of a verb is the person or thing that receives the action of the verb. –It answers the question “who” or “what.” The direct object pronoun takes the place of the direct object noun.

Direct object pronouns For example: Do you see me? The Martins are inviting you. The teacher is helping us. I thank you. He is eating it. We are reading them.

Direct Object Pronouns EnglishFrench Meme (m’) You (sing. and informal) te (t’) It/him/herle, la (l’) Usnous You (plural or formal)vous Themles

Direct Object Pronouns Where are direct object pronouns placed in French? –The me, te, le, la, nous, vous and les come RIGHT before the verb of which they are the object. The sentences may be affirmative, interrogative, negative or have an infinitive.

What are Indirect object pronouns What is an indirect object? –The indirect object of a verb is the person to whom the verb’s action is directed. –It answers the questions “to whom” or “for whom.” The indirect object pronoun takes the place of the indirect object noun.

Indirect object pronouns For example: She is giving me a scarf. They are writing to you. We are writing him a letter We are sending a letter to her. He is telling us a story. I am talking to you. You are calling them. Please note: In the way that we would normally write in French, ALL of the italicized words would be indirect object pronouns. This is not the case in English. Some may be objects of the preposition. You must be very careful!

Indirect Object Pronouns EnglishFrench Meme (m’)*** You (sing. and informal) te (t’)*** Him/herlui Usnous*** You (plural or formal)vous*** Themleur

A tip to help you! You may be wondering, how do I know when a word is an indirect object, direct object, or object of the preposition. When you see a verb + à, the French like to “do away” with the à and rewrite the sentence with an indirect object pronoun.

Indirect object pronouns Je donne un cadeau à Paul. Je lui donne un cadeau. Il téléphone à ses amis. Il leur téléphone. Elle écrit une lettre à sa mère. Elle lui écrit une lettre. Ils ressemblent à Bob et moi. Ils nous ressemblent. Notice: Indirect object pronouns are placed BEFORE the verb of which they are the object.

Let’s Practice! Est-ce que Paul ressemble à son frère? Oui, il lui ressemble. Tu parles à la banquière? Oui, je lui parle. Vous offrez un coca à moi? Oui, nous t’offrons un coca. Ta correspondante écrit souvent à toi? Oui, elle m’écrit souvent.
