{ Imperialism Debate Modern World History – December 2015

 I will decide my stance on imperialism, and work with others to make a case for it.  I will answer questions about imperialism to make sure I have evidence and examples for the debate on Friday. Learning Targets

1) What is my opinion on imperialism? Is imperialism ever justified, or is it always wrong? 2) What evidence can I use to support my opinion? 3) What are two reasons I can use to show my evidence to my peers and the opposing debaters? Write down the answers to these questions on your own: Write down the answers to these questions on your own:

{ If you think imperialism is ever justified, stand on the right of the room. If you disagree: to the left, to the left. Find others that share your opinion.

Elect people to these positions: Elect people to these positions:  Leader:  Recorder:  Accountability Officer:  The leader chooses which questions to address, and leads the group’s discussion.  The recorder takes notes and keeps track of the group’s arguments and opinions.  The Accountability Officer keeps the group on task, and makes sure that everyone contributes. This should take your group no more than three (3) minutes. Otherwise, Mr. Hook will decide for you, and nobody likes a dictatorship.

 What arguments do we want to bring up?  What evidence do we have for our opinions?  In what order should we discuss our claims? Start organizing your argument: Recorders, leaders, and accountability officers, your work starts now! The success of your group depends on how focused you are, so make sure to work hard to ensure your success!

 Remember that each point you make will be countered by the opposing team. To be prepared, make sure you can answer their counterpoint with another argument.  Think about every angle of your argument: how the will the opposing side argue against us? How can we argue against them? A Brief Reminder...

{{ Imperialism is Justified Imperialism is Justified  What did imperialism bring to the world?  How did it benefit imperialized countries?  How did it have a positive impact upon the world as a whole? Imperialism is never justified.  How did imperialism hurt the countries that were imperialized?  How did imperialism hurt the nations that did the imperializing?  What were the negative impacts for the world? Questions to Consider Keep in mind, these are not the only questions you can discuss. These are just sample questions to help start your dialogue. Think of the reasons for imperialism, how imperialism works, and its effects for both nations.

 Do you personally feel prepared?  Can I contribute during the debate?  Do you think your group has a good case?  Are we prepared to present and argue?  How can you improve before tomorrow?  Is there anything I can research tonight to help out during the debate tomorrow? For Tomorrow:
