Rhetorical strategies: – Convey authority Jenny Furlong is the Director of Career Planning and Professional Development at the Graduate Center, City University of New York. Previously, she was an Associate Director in New York University’s Office of Faculty Resources, an Associate Director of Graduate Student Career Development at Columbia University’ s Center for Career Education, and an Associate Director for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows in the Career Services office of the University of Pennsylvania. At the University of Pennsylvania, she worked extensively with postdocs and doctoral students in the biomedical sciences on their job searches. She is the co-author with Julie Vick of the Career Talk column in The Chronicle of Higher Education and co-author with Julie Vick and Rosanne Lurie of The Academic Job Search Handbook, 5th ed. (Philadelphia: U. of Pennsylvania Press, 2016). Dr. Furlong earned her Ph.D. in Romance Languages at the University of Pennsylvania and her B.A. in Comparative Literary Studies at Northwestern University. Her academic training is in eighteenth-century French literature, history, and culture; she dabbles in book history as well.
