Subject-Verb Agreement

Basic Rule Singular subjects need singular verbs. Plural subjects need plural verbs. Singular verbs= S Plural verbs = NO S

These create problems: Phrases that come between the subject pronoun and its verb —may contain plural words and confuse. Each of the basketball players is excited about tonight’s game.

These create problems: Indefinite Pronouns such as everyone and everybody seem plural, but they are always singular — so they need a singular verb. Remember: each, body, one , her, thing! 1. Everyone who worked on the science project is a winner. 2. Each of us has to answer the phone.

These create problems: BOTH indefinite pronouns (AKA: Bofers)- they can be singular or plural! You MUST look at the noun they refer to (all, any, more, most, some, none). 1. Some of the workers on the building have left for the day. Some refers to the workers= plural

These create problems: Compound subjects joined by AND are plural! Compound subjects joined by OR/NOR- look at word closest to verb! 1. Sally and Greg are friends. 2. Sally or Greg knows Spanish. Greg is closest to the verb.

These create problems: Collective nouns can be either singular or plural. (team, staff, class…) The team celebrates the win. OR The team practice their batting swings. The team as ONE celebrates! The team as INDIVIDUALS practice their swings! Their is your clue that it is plural!

These create problems: Nouns that end in “S” are not always plural! Titles, amounts, measurements and time are singular! The mumps is a type of sickness. The Vow is a good movie. Two-thirds is all I have.

These create problems: The words there and here are never subjects. Here are the papers you gave me. Here is my answer. Here is not the subject.

These create problems: Be careful! Inverted sentences often have the subject after the verb! Do you know the answer? Because of the thunder, under the bed ran the dog. Find the verb & ask yourself who or what did that– the answer is the subject!

Let’s Try These! Directions: If the subject and verb are in agreement click "correct." If they are not, click the word that is the correct answer. Ready?
